Tips for visiting free dental medical and vision clinics

Tips for free clinic events

  • Arrive early. Some people arrive the night before the event. There are many, many people in need. The first day is best. If you are turned away on the last day then that is your last option. If you are turned away the first day, you can come back.
  • Bring something to drink and eat, it's going to be a long day. Food in your teeth is the least of anyone's worries and the last thing you need is to get grumpy or have your sugar low in this situation.
  • Develop relationships with those around you. I have seen some of the most beautiful things happen in those long lines. Beside don't we all need to encourage and be encouraged?
  • Give the people that help you heart-felt thanks. They are giving themselves for you. Sure some may have other motives, but for the most part it is doing work for free in the toughest situations followed by painful recovery. It is much easier to get volunteers when they spread the news about what a good experience it was.
  • Take your medicine. If you usually take medicine, don't skip today unless your doctor tells you so. For example, if you skip your blood pressure medicine and it is too high, you can't be treated.
  • Ask questions and get further direction. The greatest thing I've done about my oral health is learn what makes me healthy. Ask your professional for advice. There is no way to serve all needs in these events, so you'll need follow-up care.
